Levocetirizine is a third-generation non-sedative antihistamine, developed from the second-generation antihistamine cetirizine. Chemically, Levocetirizine is the active enantiomer of Cetirizine, being the R-enantiomer of the cetirizine racemate.
Composition
Each 5ml contains:
- Levocetirizine Hydrochloride I.P. 2.5 mg
Mechanism of Action
Levocetirizine works by blocking histamine receptors. It does not prevent the actual release of histamine from mast cells but prevents it from binding to its receptors. This prevents the release of other allergy chemicals and increases blood supply to the area, providing relief.
Indications
Seasonal/allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, pruritis, adjunct in asthma management.
Contraindications
Contraindicated if the patient is allergic to any ingredient in levocetirizine or to cetirizine. Children 6 months to 11 years of age with impaired renal function.
Side Effects
Slight sleepiness, headache, mouth dryness, lightheadedness.
