Macgyl-O is a combination of Ofloxacin and Metronidazole, used for treating certain bacterial and protozoal infections.
Overview
Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for treating certain kinds of bacterial infections. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used particularly for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, acting as an antibiotic, amebicide, and antiprotozoal.
Composition
Each 5 ml contains:
- Ofloxacin I.P. 50 mg
- Metronidazole (as Benzoate) I.P. 100 mg
Mechanism of Action
Ofloxacin stops the production of bacteria by inhibiting the repair and reproduction of their genetic material (DNA). Metronidazole enters the cells of microorganisms that contain nitroreductase, where its nitro group is reduced. Unstable intermediate compounds bind to DNA and inhibit synthesis, causing cell death.
Indications
GI infections including traveler's diarrhea, shigellosis, inflammatory bowel syndrome, and UTIs.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this product or its ingredients.
Side Effects
Strong metallic taste in the mouth, increased light sensitivity, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting.
Precautions
Not recommended for children under one year of age. Must be used with caution in those with known or suspected central nervous system (CNS) disorders.
