Norstrep combines Norfloxacin and Loperamide to treat infectious diarrhoea and related bowel conditions.
Overview
Norstrep is a combination of Norfloxacin, a first-generation synthetic fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent used to treat common as well as complicated urinary tract infections, and Loperamide, a synthetic piperidine derivative used against diarrhoea resulting from gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease.
Composition
Each capsule contains:
- Norfloxacin I.P. 250 mg
- Loperamide Hydrochloride I.P. 2 mg
Mechanism of Action
Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary to separate bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division. Loperamide decreases the activity of the myenteric plexus, decreasing the tone of longitudinal smooth muscles while increasing the tone of circular smooth muscles of the intestinal wall, increasing transit time and allowing more water to be absorbed out of the fecal matter.
Indications
Effective for the treatment of diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, and drug-induced diarrhoea.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in those with a history of tendonitis, tendon rupture, and hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones. Treatment should be avoided in the presence of high fever or bloody stool (dysentery). Not effective in diarrhoea caused by cholera, shigella, or campylobacter.
Side Effects
Nausea, dizziness, stomach cramps, headache, weakness, dry mouth.
